about

These are hard days. We're stuck inside and protesting for justice outside.

Releasing new music got pushed down the list out of respect for everything else that's happening in the world. I waited until today because this the anniversary of the day I married my wife. This song is for her and for us. My father once told me that when things are great, loving someone is easy. Loving someone through tragedy and struggle is the real test.

We’ve felt the crushing weight of death. We’ve sang our children to sleep through nightmares. We’ve floated through days lost in each other’s eyes and hands. We’ve planted roots and found community. I’ve never been so sure that I made the right decision as when my wife holds me up when I’m too tired to stand and tells me that we’ll keep going…together. I do the same for her and we’ll keep switching places for as long as we have.

These days feel slow, but they are full of moments bright enough to be remembered forever. These days will pass and we’ll somehow figure out how we all got through a pandemic and managed to burn down systemic white supremacy.

I recorded and produced this song in my car so I wouldn’t wake up my kids. It was all mixed by my brother Mark “Exit” Goodchild. The art was done, as always, by my ace Carl Sutton (Deprived Anxiety).

My sister Alexandra Love from Beautiful Chorus/Solillaquists of Sound sang with me on the chorus. She’s one of my favorite voices and people of all time.

Huge thank you to Jake Sebert at CREAT!V for the video. Check him out for all your video needs.

Take extra time today to recognize how strong you are.

lyrics

The distance is a mystery
from here to the sun there’s no end I can understand
Mostly I think of you and me
and how undone we’ve been since this all began
I take my breaths in a soft light
down the hall from the sleeping ones I love
Too tired to dance or fight
I stopped wearing a watch cause days are done
Passing by the burn pile
The stream sings for a while
when the sky opens up and keeps us in
I appreciate the way the tantrums fade
when the music is played when our little devils grin
you say there’s hope yet
as long as we keep our noses dry in the cold wind
something is happening
I’m sure that something is happening

Always knew I’d see
the end of everything I know
But I never thought it would happen…this…slow
As long as I’m with you
I’m ready to see the new day through
Always knew I’d see
the end of everything I know
But I never thought it would happen…this…slow
As long as I’m with you
I’m ready to see the new day through

Hard to explain
to those that are floating
not tethered to tiny fists
You live for someone else
while still trying to prove you exist
crossing 40 feels different
the daily creaks are a reminder
I don’t take it for granted
I see myself as a survivor
Open to let downs reshaping the struggle
picking up the pieces and redesigning the puzzle
trouble is… age feels… like a planet around your neck
the burden is certain to cause shame and regret
especially when you’re trapped behind walls
with people who say you’re hero
But they don’t understand how fragile the makings are of an old rapper’s ego
We need validation and tragedy
we like to leave the lights on til we have to
jumpstart the battery
driving on Empty running the signs
checking the screen til we losing our minds
It’s in our blood to be connected
to share the sinking the ship in open waters
to be something for someone
to be a legend to my daughter
Damn Apocalypse can make you trip on
all the wrong things
Right now let’s forget we’re all on fire
and ignore the shark fins

Always knew I’d see
the end of everything that I know
But I never thought that it would happen…this…slow
As long as I’m with you
I’m ready to see the new day through
As long as I’m with you
I’m ready to see the new day through
Always knew I’d see
the end of everything that I know
But I never thought that it would happen…this…slow
As long as I’m with you
I’m ready to see the new day through
As long as I’m with you
I’m ready to see the new day through
