about

I wrote this one afternoon while my daughter was in the middle of battling a horrible fever. It was days of struggling through 105 temperature for hours on end. When that happens she usual goes in and out of fever dreams. Laying still and then startling awake. I didn’t want to leave her side, but I also needed to do something with the anxiety I was feeling. In between conscious moments I started writing. There wasn’t music connected to the words but the words had a clear rhythm. Over and over I was spinning around what my family meant to my art and the new ways I fit into the world. My wife has been by my side for almost 15 years and is a constant source of creativity. She’s always there with a fresh perspective and critical mind. She understands that my writing is sometimes painfully abstract, but she knows I have reason for every word and I write for everyone. I’ve always known that my closest relationships were the sparks that re-lit the fire. Seeing your child vulnerable and sick is a humbling experience. You realize that control is a construct of the ego and there is a natural current pushing against it. It’s hard to not go back there when I listen to this, but when I do I’m grateful for the art that’s pulled from trauma and turned into triumph. It’s clear to me that my biggest connection to fans/supporters was when I wrote about my own experiences. I’ve been looking to bridge the gap between my old work (Glue) and my new musical universe. Consider this is a return to those days. Thanks for listening and sharing. You are building a path forward for us. We’re truly grateful.

lyrics

I write this for no one while everyone is finding space
in time we will erase but right now that’s not the case
something has to give and something has to take
we build relationships on the strength of what we make
It’s the big revenge it’s payoff in the last chance
I let the spirit talk and I let the devil in me dance
It’s all been worth something This moonlight expression
questioning myself and keep my worried family guessing

I write this for no one
But I listen to you
I write this for no one
But I listen to you

It’s for something bigger than right now
a daughter fevered in a dream
a son that loses breath and a wife that shapes the s.t.e.a.m.
For friends that live through the grief of my catalog
You can bury me in the sky and let me fall into the analog
In a loop that vibrates past the last light
I never want to lose my grip so I hold your hand tight
You can squeeze back and keep track of the places we have been
Never been worried about the now because I know we don’t end

I write this for no one
But I listen to you
I write this for no one
But I listen to you
I’ll write you live
I live to write
You’re right I’ll keep on running straight towards that light
I’ve run into something catch me on the fall
And I’ll live to write the story of us all

I’ve been listening since first breath
I’ve heard the suffering in the stereo
I’ve been obsessed with quiet death
Looking up from the burial
Told from too young to let the plan unfold
Hold your head up high while you get dragged through the coals to the cold…and I know
The obsession to please everyone comes to me honest
I’ve bought into the struggle without seeing what the cost is
But I’ll pay a fortune in broken bones to reach you as you slip
I’ve been holding my family tight and sealing those open wrists
I apologize that you may not hear me before I arrive
Swimming toward the deep and running right toward the hive
I’m here with a million ideas to save our days
As the hours fall away. as the minute fall away. as the seconds fall away
Until it’s all gone

I’ll write you live
I live to write
You’re right I’ll keep on running straight towards that light
I’ve run into something catch me on the fall
And I’ll live to write the story of us all
